Friday, March 6th, 2009

Developing design pattern libraries is a compelling and powerful user experience exercise that can pay long-term dividends for companies seeking to standarize their interfaces. RDVO has completed a number of projects in this space.

Take a look at an overview of the service and how your company can use this exercise to improve their applications and experiences.

Busy is as busy does

So where do I start? The last month has been crazy. We accepted our first Webby Award, won a bunch of new gigs, brought on a few new people, and continue to churn out great work.

We accept this award for the people of Boston…
We had a great time at the Webbys accepting the award for mbta.com. Mike D conceived and delivered the best five-word acceptance speech ever given for a Transit website: “Fewer Boston Drivers…your welcome!”

Can you find RDVO on the red carpet?

Mike accepts the award for mbta.com. The five-word speech: “Fewer Boston drivers…you’re welcome”

The after-party was even more fun than the show. DJ Jazzy Jeff dee-jayed the night away where Ben was the subject of one more five-word speech: “Most tragic dance moves…ever.”

New Projects
We’re pleased to announce several great new projects. We’re now working on the user experience for the new trip planner for 511.org, a roll-up of San Francisco transit organizations. We’re also working on the redesign for Carbonite, a online backup provider, and are working with online community provider Communispace on planning out their new online marketing platform.

We also have a couple of new engagements working on product UI that we’ll be announcing soon.

More coming soon…

Quality matters — online video leaders compared.

Monday, November 27th, 2006

Does the quality of online video matter, or has the fact that Internet playback quality has always been awful desensitized us? As you’ll see from this online comparison, there is quite a difference in quality among the leading video websites. As you may remember, however, Betamax offered higher quality than VHS. On the Internet, it appears that speed of delivery trumps quality. Based on the comparison, YouTube has perhaps the lowest quality, followed closely by Google Video. YouTube and Google are the clear leaders.

New Toys from Google

Google quietly released a couple of new tools this week: a code search and a Google Gadgets update that allows developers to cut-and-paste Google widgets onto your website.

Code search claims over one billion lines of open source code. Although it’s only been live for less than a day, searchers have already pointed out several ways the tool can be used to hack the passwords and serial numbers errantly dropped into the wrong file. Jason Kottke has compiled a nice list of dark corners created by sloppy code.

In a move that should thrill the MySpace set, Google Gadgets allows you to paste interactive code objects into any webpage. With over 1200 gadgets to choose from, there’s nothing stopping users who want to add trivia, maps, games, or any number of kitschy items.

Google, Yahoo, and Apple have all embraced interactive widgets as important elements or their sites or OS. They do offer promise as an interactive marketing elements. There have been some excellent applications on websites promoting feature films. The viral possibilities are obvious.
